The PLC rig is designed to teach the basics of PLC automation by programming industrial PLCs using ladder logic.
The rig employs an Allen-Bradley Micrologix PLC that can be programmed using RSLogix software. The setup uses inputs from four position sensors and controls two pneumatic valves which in turn activate two pneumatic pistons. Very simple to fairly complex designs can be prototyped and tested in real-time. Students create their own programs and then upload the design file to the PLC using the RSLogix software, which is running on the remote lab server. Once uploaded, students can interact with their design through a web interface while the program is running on real hardware. A video stream provides visual feedback of the results of their PLC programming.
