The rig is instrumented with strain gauges on each individual truss member, therefore students can see how forces are transferred along these members to the supports on either side of the truss.
The Truss Testing Rig allows students to observe forces induced in a common building structure, the truss, which can be found e.g. in a roof or a bridge. The experiment permits a gradual increase of the applied force at the bottom to observe the loads on individual truss members in both tension and compression. Loads can be directly measured by means of strain gauges bonded to the model truss structure.
