The objective of this rig is to further students' understanding of how to use strain gauges in engineering design, particularly the application of Mohr's Circle on strain gauge readings to find directions and magnitudes of principal stresses. This rig has been approved but is on hold until future notice.
The experiment consists of a beam on which strain gauges are fixed in several locations and with several different orientations to provide readings of the strain at these selected points. Through electric actuators, forces and torques could be applied to create stresses in the specimen. The users of the experiment will be able to set forces and receive strain-readings from the strain gauges.
