Glossary

Name Description
activity Also known as experiment activity, a single instance of a distinct and discrete learning activity carried out by one or more students. Note that this may be carried out over several sessions.
activity design Also known as experiment activity design, which specifies the intended form that a given activity should take. All activities that meet this design should have the same learning objectives and are carried out on the same rig type with a given configuration.
catalogue A browsable and searchable list of all available rigs and lessons.
collection Also known as a laboratory rig collection, which is a collection of homogeneous rigs, all of the same rig type, which are co-located and managed together.
consumer A consumer of remote labs and its associated resources.
developer A developer of rigs and/or remote lab resources.
device Also known as a laboratory device, which is a single piece of equipment that forms part of a rig laboratory.
pool Also known as a laboratory rig pool; the collection of homogeneous rigs, all of the same rig type, which may be distributed across multiple physical locations and managed by different organisations, but which can be treated as a single logical collection for access purposes.
provider A provider of remote labs and its associated resources.
remote lab Also known as a physical hardware laboratory; multiple collections of heterogeneous rigs, possibly belonging to multiple rig types, which are co-located and managed together.
rig Also known as a laboratory rig instance, which is a single instance of a physical system made from various devices (including associated software and hardware) that can be used by one or more students in carrying out a distinct and discrete learning activity.
rig client Software abstraction of the rig that accepts abstract commands like 'allocate' & 'deallocate' and performs these in a rig specific way.
rig config Also known as a laboratory rig configuration; the configuration required of a rig for carrying out a particular activity design.
rig controller A device that controls or runs the rig.
rig monitor Monitors the rig and provides rig status (i.e rig good, rig bad, rig fault) back to the system. Monitors the rig and the rig controller.
rig type Also known as a laboratory rig type; the class to which a rig belongs, and within which any rig can be used interchangeably.
sequence Also known as an experiment sequence; a sequence of experiment/lab-based learning activities that together are intended to result in a coherent set of learning outcomes.
session Also known as an experiment session, which is a single time-contiguous period during which one or more students carry out all or part of a laboratory activity.
